IE 11 offline install
I need to install IE11 on a 2008 R2 SP1 server that has no internet access. I figured I’d just download the 53Mb offline installer and install it. I found right away that the installer wants to connect to the internet to install updates before the install can begin. Not an option.
I found https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2847882#bookmark-list%20of%20prerequisite%20updates that lists six required Windows updates and three optional Windows Updates that are prerequisites. Some sites say that the optional updates aren’t optional.
I attempted to install all nine of the Windows Updates, but some were already installed, and some weren’t applicable to my system. After I got through the nine installs, I ran the IE11 Offline installer and it again wanted to connect to the internet to download updates.
A little more digging around, I found that you can use the /update-no switch and that will allow it to install. It didn’t work for me.
I’m still working on this (on the side). I’ll update when I find the answer. Anyone have any ideas?
Edit: I finally got IE11 installed. It’s not pretty, and I’m not proud of it, but it’s done. I read a LOT of threads about this issue, and nobody has a real answer.
I found a thread that suggested looking at the install log c:windowsIE11_main.log. I looked and found the issue: WMI query for Hotfixes timed out. Query string: ‘Select HotFixID from Win32_QuickFixEngineering WHERE HotFixID=“KB2729094”' Error: 0x00040004 (262148). It essentially says that Hotfix KB2729094 is not installed. But it is. Another look through a bunch of threads with the new information. It seems to be a common issue. There is a lot of speculation (and magic), but no hard answers on why this happens.
I found a thread that said to Start the install of KB2729094, then immediately install IE11 before it realizes that KB2729094 is already installed.
Another thread said, Install KB2729094. It will give an error saying it is already installed. Then try the IE11 install. Seems like a simple approach, so I tried it, and it worked. Again, no idea why. It just worked.
I looked back in the log after the successful install, and it didn’t even check for KB2729094. Weird.
